A Favorite Pastime in America and in Europe is Ice Fishing
Ice fishing has been a favorite pastime in America and Europe for decades. It is now considered to be a sport in many countries and on many continents. Ice fishing as a favorite hobby originated in the Arctic coasts of America primarily with the Eskimos. Although it was an activity done mostly by the Eskimos, it has spread to many other places.
Ice fishing uses lines, hooks or spears in an open body of water that is covered by ice. Basically, fishermen from many cold places with long winters were the only ones who could typically enjoy ice fishing. Abundant fish populated the bays of the Great Lakes which were the favorite fishing places in America.
Siberia is also a place populated by Eskimos wherein ice fishing is also a favorite pastime. Siberia is located at the central and eastern section of Russia, stretching along the coast of the Pacific. There, sporting fish is an abundant activity and the locals enjoy catching pike fish and perch. In Finland, ice fishing is more like a quiet pastime. Ice fishing for the Finnish is usually part of the isolation process. They get decked out in astronaut-like drysuits which provide them enough heat to keep them from freezing. They would just sit down on the edge of the icy water and patiently wait for the bait to move.
Ice fishing is not just a sport. It is also a time for temporary isolation and reflection. It is a time to ponder while reminiscing about the past. For some, it is a special time to bond with friends and families. Ice fishing has become a time to be thankful for the beautiful and quiet moments that we can truly enjoy.
