Why Buy a Canoe Trailer?

If you're accustomed to throwing your canoe on top of your car, a trailer may seem like an unnecessary expense to you. If you have more than one canoe, you can get a car top carrier for a fraction of the expense of a canoe trailer. For that matter, why not use an old utility trailer if you have to tow something? Here are five reasons why a canoe trailer is worth the money.

  1. It's designed to carry kayaks, canoes and bicycles. Canoe trailers are not utility trailers, and they won't carry everything. They will, however, safely carry the sporting equipment they were designed for. A canoe trailer keeps your equipment from bumping around and getting scratched up.
  2. Easy loading. You have to lift your equipment overhead to get it onto a rooftop rack, and you usually have to lift it into a utility trailer. A canoe trailer allows you easy access so that you can load your stuff with minimal lifting.
  3. Aerodynamics. Rooftop racks are gas guzzlers. They create a huge drag and decrease your gas mileage significantly. Utility trailers are heavy and also create drag, though not as much as a rooftop rack. Canoe trailers are designed to fit into your slipstream. They create very little drag and very little reduction in gas mileage.
  4. Your stuff is visible. You can easily see your equipment behind you, which you cannot do with a carrier or utility trailer
  5. You can handcart it to the water. Canoe trailers are light enough that you can disconnect them and use them to handcart your equipment to the water's edge.
  6. The extra cost of a canoe trailer is easily justifiable if you transport several canoes, kayaks and/or bicycles very often. The savings in effort, back pain and gas make a canoe trailer worth the cost.
