Music Videos

A music video is short film that accompanies a music piece, most often a song. A music video is created as a marketing device, to promote the sale of a music recording. Most often, a music video is a videotaped performance of a popular song. It is choreographed as a story related to the content of the song. Live music videos include footage from the concerts of rock or pop artists.

A music video is usually three to five minutes long, as long as the song and often includes stylizations, quick cuts and fancy erotic imagery. Computer graphics are used to stylize a music video. Music videos are most often used to promote singles and are very popular within the generic rock circuit. Though most videos flaunt macho rock stars and scantily clad dancers, quite a few are popular for their cutting-edge techniques and artistic innovations.

The origin of music videos dates back to the 1980's, when MTV (Music Television) first launched them. These videos are now often referred to as promo videos or promos, since they are music promotions. In the 1990s, MTV introduced a number of videos that represented a variety of music forms, from traditional to hip-hop and heavy metal to experimental rock. Though, MTV targeted teenagers through these music videos, the videos also included ballads and "soft rock"songs.

Music videos are even referred to as "short-form" music videos to distinguish them from full-length films. In the 1980's the videos were known as rock videos to describe this particular form of entertainment. Today, music videos involve all styles of filmmaking, including animation, live action films, documentaries, and non-narrative, abstract film.

Moving on in the 21st century, a new and more innovative method for marketing music to fans has been discovered. This publicity style is extremely convenient for the music-marketing field. Popularly known as the Internet, the application offers a more direct marketing opportunity to many pop stars and artists. The Internet offers the best music distribution and exposure through legitimate subscription companies. These companies offer clients the opportunity to watch music videos and control the images. Music videos can now be viewed with the help of control buttons such as fast-forward, rewind, skip and replay, within the technology. Many of these online music video web sites are more advanced than TV broadcasting channels.
