Music Lyrics

What is common between these songs: All you need is Love (Beatles), Light My Fire (The Doors), Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd), Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana), Nothing Else Matters (Metallica), Black (Pearl Jam)? Apart from the fact that all these songs are by some of the best musicians and performers in the music industry, the binding force is the power of the lyrics.

The lyrics is an integral part of any song, apart from the instruments, and remains embedded in the minds of fans for a long time. This is simply because most within the market segment don't understand the music and its technicality. The lyrics are words with meanings everyone relates to and much simpler to understand. Thus, while you may not remember the amazing piece of guitar riff in between a song, you are most likely to pick up the chorus or a verse from the song, and remember it for years.

Lyrics of a song usually convey one or more message. Most common ideas used as lyrics, time and again, are love, hate, present and previous relationships, relationships gone bad and issues addressing the system. As we all have similar feelings and most of the time experiences, we immediately strike a chord with a particular song. The best songs are considered as those, which immediately "connect" with the audiences, wherein a person feels that the song is directly addressed to him or her.

While certain lyrics directly state the idea, sometimes brutally, there are others that sound vague. Such songs make no sense to the listener, but the tune may connect you to it. A song might mean different things to different people. Such songs have the ability to be recognized by a large audience, frequently cutting across boundaries, and cultures.

This is what makes the songs listed above the voice of their generation, while still being recognized by people of different times. This is what makes them timeless legacies.
