INFORMATION ABOUT FIBROMYALGIA
Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by aches and pains all over the body. It is a real disorder. Do not let anyone tell you it is all in your head. Symptoms of fibromyalgia include; muscle and joint pain, fatigue, headaches, restlessness, tingling in hands and feet, leg cramps, light headedness, nervousness, depression, inability to focus, stomach upset, trouble swallowing and frequent or painful urination.
As you may guess, looking at the symptoms of fibromyalgia, it is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms of fibromyalgia are similar to those of many other diseases. Additionally, there are no definitive tests,( i.e. blood work, CT scan) that can be used to diagnose fibromyalgia. A diagnosis of fibromyalgia may be made when symptoms of widespread pain (both sides of the body and above and below the waist) have lasted more than three months and eleven out of eighteen known fibromyalgia tender points exist.
Treatment of fibromyalgia is difficult and often requires a team approach including a doctor, physical therapist and other health care providers. The FDA has not approved any drugs to treat fibromyalgia.
There are steps you can take to reduce the pain experienced with fibromyalgia. It is important to get enough sleep; this can ease the pain and fatigue. Gentle exercise, such as walking can be helpful in relieving pain and stiffness. A balanced healthy diet will aid in relieving the symptoms of fibromyalgia. If you have a very demanding job it may be necessary to change jobs or adapt your current job.
It is undoubtedly a challenge to live with fibromyalgia, but it can be done. Do not feel you must suffer without relief. Seek the help of a health care professional and live a fuller life.
