ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT BREAST CANCER?
We are bombarded with the figures; "Breast Cancer attacks one in eight women". Of course we are worried about breast cancer. If we empower ourselves with knowledge about breast cancer we can reduce some of our fears.
Breast Cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the breast. But what does that mean? Normally healthy cells die when they are old and new ones form to replace them. Occasionally this process changes; old cells do not die when they should and new cells grow when they shouldn't. The extra cells join together and form a tumor. All tumors are not necessarily cancerous. A tumor that does not attack healthy tissue is known as benign. It is usually easily removed and does not grow back.
Malignant (or cancerous) tumors do invade the healthy tissue surrounding the tumor. They can be removed but may grow back. Occasionally, cells from a malignant tumor break off and travel to another part of the body. This is called metastasis.
Who is at risk for breast cancer? Men and women. (Approximately 1700 men learn they have breast cancer each year). There are certain factors that make a person more susceptible to breast cancer. These include; a family history of breast cancer, diets high in saturated fats, hormone replacement therapy, beginning period before age 12, drinking two or more alcoholic drinks per day.
Common symptoms of breast cancer are; tenderness in the breast, a lump in the breast or near the underarms, a change in the size or shape of the breast or nipple, or red or swollen breasts or nipples.
It is important to do regular self examinations and to see a health care professional for a breast exam; once every three years under age 40 and once every year after that.
There is good news. If detected early there is an excellent chance that breast cancer can be treated successfully. Many women have overcome cancer and are now living a normal healthy life.
If you have any questions about breast cancer see a physician.
