Understanding Employment Law
Employment law is a changing field. It can be difficult for human resources personnel to keep up with all of the changes that are made on almost a daily basis. With legal precedents being set in one state or another, sometimes employment law is an overwhelming field to understand.
There are, though, several things you can do to help keep your head above the turbulent employment law waters. First, with your company lawyer, create a step-by-step guide for avoiding any kind of legal trouble with those you employ. General rules can include things like respecting employees, keeping logs of everything, and sticking with the company policies.
Second, understand basic employment law in your state. Know about laws related to wages and hours employees can work. Stay abreast of hot button issues like sexual harassment in the workplace and workmen's compensation rulings. The more you know and understand the requirements, the better you will be at keeping your company on the right side of the law.
Finally, whenever possible, create a mediation situation before a problem explodes. Mediation, whether through the courts or within the company, can keep costs down, can help keep situations a bit more private, can speed up the compromise process, and it can help you avoid more serious employment law battles down the line.
As a human resources worker, knowledge of state and federal employment law is essential both to the success of your individual job and to the success of your company. Talk with your company lawyer today.
